American semiconductor firm Intel seeks to boost its advanced chip packaging services by a factor of four by 2025, with a new factory in Malaysia as part of its plan.
ANALYSIS In announcing the departure of Bob Swan as chief executive, Intel has made sure to mention that the announcement has nothing to do with either its financial performance in 2020 or its failure to introduce 7nm CPUs on time.
US processor maker Intel has sold its NAND memory and storage business to South Korea's SK hynix, statements from the two companies say, with the going price being US$9 billion (A$12.8 billion).
Intel will be forced to delay the introduction of 7nm CPUs, with the company telling investors on Friday it would have to push back the schedule for producing the most advanced semiconductors by six months as it has no economically viable way to produce them at the moment.
Apple has bought a majority stake in Intel's smartphone modem business for US$1 billion and about 2200 Intel employees will move to the Cupertino-based iPhone maker, along with intellectual property, equipment and leases.
Apple may soon have a missing piece in its iPhone manufacturing chain if it succeeds in acquiring Intel's 5G smartphone modem business, with reports that the two companies are well advanced in talks to achieve this end.
Close on the heels of the announcement of a truce in the Apple-Qualcomm patent war, Intel has said it will be exiting the 5G smartphone modem business and not even launching the products it had planned for 2020.
